I have just answered a very similar question elsewhere; I will copy and paste it here as it can easily be applied to a nervous break down:

';I imagine nervous exhaustion would carry a number of symptoms, from a change in sleeping patterns (lack or excess), a change in eating habits, mood changes, feelings of helplessness and tiredness, feelings of exhaustion and weakness, constantly feeling like you've 'had enough' and just want to rest, feeling agitated and frustrated, being hostile to others, and just feeling quite fed up.

Stress is a similar thing, I suppose 'nervous exhaustion' is just a different type of stress with many of the same symptoms.

Someone suffering from nervous exhaustion may also experience panic attacks and anxious thoughts and feelings.

Stress can be very damaging to the heart, as people with 'Type A' personalities or people suffering with stress are more likely to have heart problems or heart attacks. It can also be damaging psychologically, and can often lead to depression or sometimes anxiety disorders.

Stress is often a result of life events, mostly negative, that affect someone deeply; be it at work, home, school or just in general.

My advice would be that if you are stessed, you need to work out what the source of the problem is. You can seek professional medical help to help you do this; a psychologist would help analyse your thoughts and thinking patterns and assist with tackling the problem, and a doctor could prescribe tablets that would help with the symptoms.

I hope this has given you a little bit more information, good luck! :)';

Now, specifically to your question, a large reason for this could be past experiences (am I right in thinking that after reading a few of your other questions?) or consequential life events in general. A person's mind is feeling that it cannot cope with these pressures and stresses no longer, and has gone into 'shut down' mode, where it just wants out and doesn't want to deal with these problems anymore.

Before the nervous breakdown occurs, I imagine the sufferer would be showing large signs of stress, but not symptoms as sever as that of a breakdown - a person suffering from a breakdown would have no desire to function anymore or to do anything, and is likely to be suffering with sever depression as they've pretty much 'given up'.

Rehabilitation would, I imagine, take place in a psychiatric hospital or ward, with close monitoring from doctors, psychiatrists and psychologists who would use a number of techniques and practises to help you deal with the source of your problems and overcome your worries. They are specially trained to do this so I suggest that if you are feeling on the edge of a nervous breakdown or are going through one, try to seek medical help urgently. With assistance your issues can be sorted and you can be on track to feeling happy again! Good luck! :)How does a persons personality change during a ';nervous break down'; usually?
with mental health there is no '; usual '; it may show in behaviour, mood swings, agitated, paranoia could be any one or mixture of all and many others as well. rehab and care can only be administered by professionals
